Captain Xu Jingkun, who lost one arm, and his ship “Haikou”

Jun 11, 2024

Xu Jingkun, the captain of the SINGCHAIN Chinese dream team Haikou, lost his left forearm in an accident at the age of 12. Despite this, he participated in the Paralympic sailing competition at 19, completed a full circumnavigation of the China Sea at 24, and in 2022 became the first Chinese captain to participate and complete the "Rum Road" with a total voyage of 3542 nautical miles. From a mountain child without a left hand to the youngest Olympic general and now a global captain riding the waves, his journey embodies the miraculous transformation of fate through dreams and perseverance.

With extensive sailing experience, Xu Jingkun has set a new goal - to participate in the Vendee solo non-stop round the World Yacht race.

The sport of sailing originated in Europe, and three major events are world-renowned: the Rum Road Single Transatlantic Race, the Coffee Road Double Transatlantic Race, and the Vendee Solo non-stop Round the World Yacht Race. Among them, the Vendee race was founded in 1989 and is recognized as one of the most challenging sailing events. It involves one person sailing alone for about four months, covering more than 26,000 nautical miles around the earth without any outside assistance. "More than 700 people have gone into space, but only about 70 people have completed the Vendee race. I want to write the name of Chinese people into the temple of extreme navigation in the world," Xu Jingkun said firmly.

To qualify for the Vendee, completion of the Rum Road and Coffee Road race with corresponding points is a prerequisite. During preparation for these events, the Haikou Tourism and Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau approached Xu Jingkun to offer naming rights for his 'war boat'. Wang Ke, director of the Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports in Haikou City, reflected on this decision: 'In early November 2022 when we decided to name Xu Jingkun's 'war boat' as 'Haikou', we considered that no Chinese had previously participated in this event. Additionally, given Haikou's status as a coastal leisure city it was an ideal location to host sailing events. Despite initial skepticism about Xu's ability to complete both races, he exceeded expectations.'

In November 2022, Xu Jingkun made history by completing the "Rum Road", becoming the first Chinese captain selected since the competition's founding in 1978 and the first Asian captain to compete in this top extreme sailing event. In November 2023, Xu Jingkun once again made history by successfully completing the "Coffee Road", becoming the first Chinese captain to be selected and complete this challenging race.

In 2024, Captain Xu approached us to create a highly precise model of his monumental ship Haikou. We are deeply honored to produce a simulation model for the legendary "Haikou," which embodies dreams and has weathered countless storms. The product's appearance is meticulously designed in accordance with the original sailing prototype, and the visual representation of the actual sailing ship is faithfully recreated, ensuring that every detail is exquisite.

The entire hull is constructed from environmentally friendly ABS material, providing a desirable weight and texture. It is complemented by classic metal paint and a high-precision UV printing process, ensuring that the ship's parts are processed to achieve maximum realism.

After months of communication, design, and production, we are pleased to finally unveil this work to the public. Like Captain Xu, our aim is for a wider audience to grasp the essence and potency of sailing through our ship model, thereby exposing more children to its influence.

The era was characterized by the proliferation of new technologies and machines, yet the art of pure model making prompted a reevaluation of the value of craftsmanship. It reminds us that behind every exquisite product lies the ingenuity of skilled craftsmen, as well as rich cultural and historical significance. Captain Xu Jingkun passed on this spirit to future generations through maritime sports, and our mission is also to impart the essence of model making to everyone through ship models, symbolizing the beauty of hope.
